A model a day – day 6 – Protector

Day 6 of  ‘a model a day’; a Dark Mechanicus Protector. I went a little against the concept art with this model, in fact a whole squad. I put forth the idea of trainee Techmarines as my Protectors, swearing stronger oaths of fealty to the Omnissiah than their parent legions. With the Heresy in full swing for my army, these Techmarines serve the Mechanicus rather than returning home to their suspicious brethren.

The model is quite a mash of parts:

Chaos marine ackpack (trimmed)
Zhufor’s head
Iron Hands’ Thunderhammer
Las pistol converted from Bolt pistol
Dark Angel veteran legs
Space marine vehicle crew chest and shoulder pad

The bulk of the armour was painted in Dark Flesh and washed with Devlan Mud. Metallics were based in Tin Bits, drybrushed with Boltgun Metal and thn washed in Devlan Mud. The cloth is base coated Charadin Granite and the hazard stripes are alternating lines of Iyanden Darksun and Charadin Granite – washed with thinned Devlan Mud.

I brought the red of the armour back up with a highlight of Dark Flesh and painted the face with Dheneb Stone. The Metals were highlighted with Chainmail.

I realised the shoulder pads were the wrong way around, so removed them and left them off while I painted the previously covered areas!

The face was washed with Ogryn Flesh and then highlighted with Dheneb Stone. Some small flicks of red and purpe wash were added to give the flesh some semblence of life. The cloth was highlighted with a 1:1 mix of Charadin Granite and Codex Grey.

I used Chainmail to paint the studs and add some weathering on the armour.

The cloth was shaded with Badab Black to help blend the highlight and then highlighted once more with pure Codex Grey.

The weapon casing and handles were painted Chaos Black and then highlighted with flicks of Chainmail.

Finishing touches include the Mechanic symbol. The white was simply Astronomican Grey highlited white and Charadin Granite washed with black.
