Masters of Malifaux

Try as I might to link new players to guides and introductions, they always seem to ask a question I cannot quickly answer. So in an attempt to create a few guide articles, the first will be a catalogue of masters.

Before I delve in, I would like to bring your attention to a fantastic set of articles posted by GMorts. He is working his way through unboxing every Malifaux crew set and has written oodles of Malifaux tutorials.

Also, a fantastic resource to use and ponder is the Malifaux crew builder.

Masters of Malifaux

In most cases, your crew needs a master. The master is the leader and generally most powerful unit you will field. If you are playing a small enough game, you can take a henchman instead of a master.

Currently, all masters belong to one or two factions (dual faction). Once you select your master, you must draw your crew from the master’s faction(s). You may also take a couple of mercenaries from the Outcasts faction. There are also some exception, with masters such as Marcus allowing you to use any unit with the beast characteristic, from any faction.

Masters tend to have synergy with themes and units within their faction, so it isn’t particularly restrictive to have to draw units from the same faction. To make a competitive, themed crew is easily and quickly done by looking at a master’s immediate minions… and Wyrd do a grand job of proving boxed sets with exactly that.

There are currently 7 factions in Malifaux, as follows:

  1. Arcanists
  2. Gremlins
  3. Guild
  4. Neverborn
  5. Outcasts
  6. Resurrectionists
  7. Ten Thunders

The masters for each faction are:

Arcanists:

  • Collette
  • Ironsides
  • Kaeris
  • Marcus
  • Mei Feng
  • Ramos
  • Rasputina

Gremlins:

Ten Thunders:

As you can see, that is a big list and there are a few entries in multiple lists – the dual faction masters. Each master has unique abilities and synergies, which will inevitable get looked at in future articles. Also note that masters exist in one of three states: Version 2 model, version 1 model or unreleased, something I haven’t marked on the list yet.
